Everyone has an appetite to possess lucky numbers in every possible way. Though getting an appealing phone number, vehicle number, or bank account number, happened by chance several years back, it has now become a pure business which involves a lot of money.
And the latest business of this sort is getting popular in Vietnam. The country has taken its obsession with ‘lucky numbers’ a level ahead. The banks in Vietnam are selling the account numbers deemed to be “lucky” in Vietnamese culture and are charging good money for this new service.
Vietnamese believe that numbers ending with six, five, and four-digit strings are lucky numbers and bring prosperity to its owner. And what can be a better place than a bank account to welcome prosperity.
The account numbers ending in ‘666’, ‘888’, ‘3939’, ‘6868’, ‘7979’, ‘33333’, ‘222222’, and ‘111111’ are these are considered lucky in the country.
The customers of Hanoi-based VPBank can buy account numbers ending in a six-digit ‘prosperity’ string for VND10 million ($431). The price for a five-digit and four-digit were lesser and came at a price of VND5 million ($216) and VND2 million ($86), respectively.
Cheaper options are available for sale with Vietnamese lender Ban Viet. In fact, ‘Ban Viet’ opened sale of 1,000 ‘lucky account numbers’ in March 2019, starting at a price of VND200,000 (US$8.63).
The bank account numbers are normally assigned to an account holder randomly by software. But VIP account holders are allowed to bypass this process and choose their own number – without paying a price. But seeing the craze of lucky numbers among common people, the banks are now throwing this perk open to a wider audience instead selling it in the black market.
Other than banks, individuals are also selling account numbers on online forums. This may fetch a price of up to VND65 million ($2,800) per number.
Hype of mobile numbers
However high, but these prices seem insignificant when compared to the price of some mobile phone numbers.
In March 2019, an “auspicious” mobile number was sold for $52,000 in an online auction in China. Some mobile numbers were sold for as high as $400,000. In 2017, a celebrity model paid $664,000 for a number and intended to resell it for $886,000. She wanted to donate a part of the proceeds to charity.
The most expensive mobile number was sold for $680,000 in 2004.
